Guillen de Castro y Bellvís, a Spanish dramatist of the school of Lope de Vega,* successfully adapted popular legends and history to Golden Age drama, culminating in Las mocedades del Cid and its sequel, Las hazañas del Cid. Born in Valencia of aristocratic origin, Castro y Bellvís is generally considered a soldier turned man of letters. He served for a time as captain of the coastguard and was appointed a knight of Santiago in 1623. He was married twice: first, unhappily, to the Marquesa Giron de Rebolledo in 1595, followed by a happier marriage to Aí ngela Salgado in 1626.
The greatest contribution of Castro y Bellvíís is his poetic reworking and adaptation to Golden Age drama of the romancero, epic and chivalresque material, myth, history, and legend. The former is epitomized by Las mocedades del Cid (The youthful deeds of the Cid), a play in two parts first published in 1618. This work and Las hazañas del Cid (The feats of the Cid) were the first dramatizations of the Cid legend and served as the model for subsequent plays about the hero, including the first great French classic tragedy, Pierre Corneille's Cid. Other successful plays of Castro's include El conde de Irlos (The Count of Irlos) and El conde Alarcos (The Count of Alarcos), both based on epic and chivalresque material. Castro also adapted several works of Cervantes* for the theater: Don Quijote de la Mancha, El curioso impertinente, and La fuerza de sangre. His mythological plays Progne y Filomena and Los amores de Dido y Eneas have also achieved considerable renown.
Following an earlier edition, the first licit edition of Castro's works appeared in Valencia in 1618, entitled Primera parte de las comedias. The Segunda parte appeared in Valencia as well, in 1625. Seven of his plays were edited by Ramoín Mesonero Romanos in 1857. The most complete edition of his works produced in the twentieth century is his Obras, edited by E. Julia in three volumes, 192527. Recent articles on Castro have not been particularly plentiful but have been quite revealing in terms of both genre and analysis of individual plays.
